Vintage:

In 2020 we saw normal budbreak and moderate early season growing conditions and overall was a warm to hot vintage. The season was marred by wildfires and potential smoke taint issues depending on the location of your vineyard sources in relation to the fires. Despite the fires the overall conditions brought phenomenal growing conditions, with some of the highest phenolic material I’ve seen in my career. The wines are plush, with enough structure to age and whites like Sauvignon Blanc are absolutely stunning. The fall unfortunately brought several freeze events during the third and fourth week of October that ended the season for the entire state.

Wine:

This Cabernet was fermented all in concrete and then aged in a combination of 265L, 300L and 500L barrels. Using only clone 2 from two picks, this Cabernet showcases the purity of fruit and freshness from the Royal Slope and will be the last of its kind as we move sourcing to Red Mountain and the Walla Walla Valley going forward.

Tasting notes:

Expansive nose of plum and currant puree, cocoa powder, lavender and sage with a hint of dried hardwood spice. Swirling adds sweetness to the rich black fruits, as it continues its towering display of complex fruit, spice and saline. An elegant monster of a wine, with incredible volume and presence, intermixed with extremely fine, penetrating tannins and floral undertones. Another level of power and sophistication in this Última.
