2020 ALLEROMB – LA GRAN FLOR
Blend: 88% Malbec 12% Cabernet Sauvignon
Aging: 20 months in 100% new French oak.
AVA: Columbia Valley
Alcohol: 14.5%
Vintage:
In 2020 we saw normal budbreak and moderate early season growing conditions and overall was a warm to hot vintage. The season was marred by wildfires and potential smoke taint issues depending on the location of your vineyard sources in relation to the fires. Despite the fires the overall conditions brought phenomenal growing conditions, with some of the highest phenolic material I’ve seen in my career. The wines are plush, with enough structure to age and whites like Sauvignon Blanc are absolutely stunning. The fall unfortunately brought several freeze events during the third and fourth week of October that ended the season for the entire state.
Wine:
The 2020 La Gran Flor was fermented entirely in concrete. It was then aged in 100% new French oak 265L Lumen barrels before being blended in November of 2021. In recent years, the Malbec has really come into its own showing tremendous depth of flavor and increasingly sophisticated aromatics. Our goal as always with this wine to make an uncompromisingly elegant and sophisticated Malbec. With the addition of our proprietary Lumen barrel the wine has added layers of complexity and a density and refined, but powerful structure we didn’t have previously.
Winemaker notes:
Intense nose of blackberry compote, lilacs, violets and lavender, with singed raspberry and black tea. Swirling adds bloomed baking spices like clove and nutmeg with rich black fruits and hardwood spice and resin. Decadently textured, with powerful structure giving this a massive drinking window. Lingering notes of spring flowers, juicy black and red fruits and a spicy streak run through a tremendously long finish.
